Special
I offered opportunities for students to get extra credit in my classes. Some occurred with assignments or tests, but I also gave other chances which were not part of those.

Each one of the extra credit exercises was geared toward getting students to go beyond the classroom work, to go beyond simply cutting and pasting something they could get from Google search. As time went on over the years I discovered that I had to limit the amount of extra credit points any student could collect over the course of a quarter. [Some students discovered that they could fail everything but if they did enough of the extra credit they could manage to pass. {I only wish some of them had put an equivalent amount of time into the daily work.}]

Any review or overview or question response had to be submitted by the end of the school day on the last day of the quarter to be considered for that quarter.

There are all kinds of opportunities available in the Saint Louis area, as I am sure there are elsewhere if one just looks.

As mentioned elsewhere, I periodically gave “extra” extra credit opportunities for students to try. These are listed under "Additional". Most often I came up with these randomly or because someone asked a question and I suggested that they could research the answer for extra credit. The rules for these things were flexible and up to me.

Here is where I raised some questions beyond the normal things in the classroom, and suggested that a student might want to just pursue some topics in more depth than we ever could do in the classroom. I changed the things on this list each quarter as I thought of them, or read an article. Some of these questions/ideas relate to areas that we might get to as the year progressed. Some of these questions could be used more than once.

If I were teaching an algebra course, for example, someone might want to learn about famous women mathematicians. But I was teaching Chemistry so my main interest was related to that although I am interested in topics and things from the other sciences.
